Jean Michel Wilmotte chairs model Palais Royal 1986 set of 2
This set of two chairs, Palais Royal model, was designed in 1986 by Jean-Michel Wilmotte then produced by Academy Paris (label present under the seat, see photo). The model is composed of a solid metal structure, a seat and a backrest in perforated metal plate, all lacquered in black epoxy.
This chair is a real piece of history: the National Fund for Historic Monuments in the gardens of the Palais Royal in Paris had launched a competition! The objective ? Rethinking the traditional wrought iron chair as seen in the paintings of lovers by Raymond Peynet, giving it a more contemporary line, while retaining the original steel wire structure.
Jean-Michel Wilmotte won this competition with this model with a design that is both radical and minimalist, which is part of the emblematic post-modernist style of the 1980s.
A true icon of 80s design as emblematic as its history!
